PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is assisting in the erection of a new school building for the Mamunuok Kindergarten in Kampung Utikini Baru SP 12, Mimika, Regency, Central Papua.

The new building built by PTFI will become a place of learning for Papuan children, specifically from the Amungme, Dani, Damal and Moni tribes that make up the majority of the population in Kampung Utikini Baru. The Mamunuok Kindergarten built by PTFI costing an investment of Rp 1.3 billion is equipped with three classrooms each with a capacity to seat 25 pupils. In addition to classrooms, the new building has three lavatories and a designated teachers’ room. Other amenities supporting the learning activity include a playground to be built at a later date.

PTFI is committed to continue working together with the local government and other partners to increase quality of education in Mimika, including building educational unfractured, broadening access to education, and improving teaching quality. “We believe PTFI investment in the education sector for Papuan children is a long-term investment for their greater long-term benefit, and for Papua in general,” Senior Vice President, Community Development, Nathan Kum said to Tribun-Papua.com, on Friday (9/6/2023).

Meanwhile the head of the foundation Yayasan Mamunuok, Devia Mom said since 2010 children in had carried out their kindergarten learning activity  in a rental building under a lease that had to be renewed every year.

This routine renewal of the lease could not offer any certainty of learning continuity. “We deeply appreciate Freeport’s initiative to advance the education of Papuan children, specifically in Kampung Utikini Baru. This decent school building provides certainty for Papuan children to continue learning and achieving their dreams, and at the same time offers hope for us to continue educating and advancing Papuan children through the education sector,” Devia Mom said.

Provision of this school building highlights PTFI commitment to developing the Mimika community over the long term. Another PTFI endeavor in this direction is development of quality of education for Mimika residents through engaging in partnership with the foundation Yayasan Pengembangan Masyarakat Amungme Kamoro (YPMAK).

PFTI also affords development of native Papuan youths through Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua (SATP) boarding schools located in Mimika, Semarang and other study destination cities outside Papua. PTFI by way of YPMAK awards scholarships for Papuan youths to gain education up to the university level.
