PT Freeport Indonesia Establishes Joint Transformation Center

Operational development in terms of the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) smelter continues to be conducted/implemented. On Saturday (11/19), PT Freeport Indonesia Pusat Transformasi Bersama (PTB), or Joint Transformation Center, was established at the Manyar Complex in collaboration with the Takmir Masjid Manyar Foundation. The facility will subsequently be used to treat/manage smelter waste.

The Joint Transformation Center functions as a temporary recyclable waste transfer facility for the Manyar smelter project. The Joint Transformation Center will endeavor the recovery of material by means of a recycling concept thereby reducing inorganic waste which has been disposed of directly into landfills.

The Manyar smelter’s waste reduction strategy includes the process of assorting construction waste directly at the smelter site, waste management/treatment at the Joint Transformation Center facility, as well as sale of value-added waste treatment products by third parties, or beneficiaries.

For example, management/treatment of remaining iron piles is assorted, cleansed, and cut prior to them being sold to local buyers. For the first phase the function of the Joint Transformation Center is being prioritized to manage the remainder iron piles, construction support wood waste and packaging waste materials by involving ‘Badan Usaha Milik Desa/BUMDes’, or Village-owned Enterprises and local waste banks.

PT Freeport Indonesia Executive Vice President Corporate Planning & Business Strategy, Jorst Garz, emphasized the company’s support in terms of the Gresik Community’s priorities for waste management. “PT Freeport Indonesia is proud to be able to be a part of this sustainability endeavor. The existence of the Joint Transformation Center facility will support the vision and mission of the Gresik community in terms of responsible waste management by means of 3R, namely reuse, reduce and recycle, as well as undertake a role in the circular economy,” he stated.

The waste originating from the smelter can be reused. In its management/treatment process, the Joint Transformation Center’s capacity is estimated to be able to receive 10-15 heavy-duty vehicles/trucks every day. The Joint Transformation Center also embraces the local economy. UMKM ‘Bank Sampah’, or the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Waste Banks, and 8 Village-Owned Enterprises will be the priorities.

The Joint Transformation Center initiated by PT Freeport Indonesia will be conducted in a sustainable manner, as well as, able to be used as a model for other enterprises.
