PT Freeport Indonesia Rescue Team Finds All Workers from Wet Material Slide Incident

Tembagapura, Mimika, October 6, 2025 - After working tirelessly for 27 challenging days, the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Rescue Team together with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mimika Police, Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency), and BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency), on Sunday, October 5, 2025, located and evacuated five colleagues from the wet material slide incident site at the Grasberg Block Cave Underground Mine. The five colleagues were found deceased.

With this discovery, all 7 (seven) colleagues affected by the incident on September 8, 2025, have been found, and the rescue process has been declared complete. Previously, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, two colleagues had been found.

Identification results by the medical team, together with the Police, confirmed that the five colleagues found in the final rescue phase are:

  1. Mr. Zaverius Magai, PT Redpath Indonesia
  2. Mr. Holong Gembira Silaban, PT Redpath Indonesia
  3. Mr. Dadang Hermanto, PT Redpath Indonesia
  4. Mr. Balisang Telile, South African national, PT Redpath Indonesia
  5. Mr. Victor Bastida Ballesteros, Chilean national, PT Redpath Indonesia

The remains will be taken to Jakarta and then escorted to their respective hometowns, except for Mr. Zaverius Magai's remains, which will be buried in Kuala Kencana, Timika.

PT Freeport Indonesia President Director, Tony Wenas, expressed deep condolences over this loss.

On behalf of myself and the company, I extend my condolences to the families who have been in Tembagapura since September 14, 2025. May God Almighty grant strength and perseverance to us all."

"I appreciate the Rescue Team who have worked tirelessly, day and night, amid very challenging conditions. The rescue required a long time due to the difficult location and the volume of wet material reaching approximately 800 thousand tons. Thank you to all parties who have provided support through manpower, thoughts, and prayers."

PT Freeport Indonesia ensures full support for all families of colleagues who have passed away, as well as handling the remains with utmost respect.

The investigation process to determine the cause of the incident will continue thoroughly and transparently. The investigation results will serve as the basis for the company to implement preventive measures to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the future.
