PT Freeport Joins Hands with SAR Timika to Present 800 Life Jackets to Mimika Coastal Residents

15 June 2023

Towards ensuring the personal protection of Mimika Regency residents living in coastal areas, on Thursday (15/6/2023) PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) presented them with 800 life jackets in conjunction with SAR Timika. The event for presentation of life jackets was attended by village heads and the district heads holding jurisdiction over Mimika coastal areas, including the Districts of Jita, Agimuga, Mimika Timur, Mimika Timur Jauh, Mimika Baru and Wania.

The presentation of life jackets was part of the commitment by PTFI, SARTimika and the Mimika government to provide residents with comfort and safety during times of maritime disaster. Beneficiaries received not just life jackets but were also counseled by SAR Timika on how to use the life jackets and on other safety measures.

A representative of PTFI management in his capacity as Technical Advisor for Community Affairs, Arnold Kayame said the 800 life jackets were presented as assistance for residents. This positive occasion was by way of initiative by PTFI, SAR Timika and the Mimika government to instill the importance of maintaining safety when at sea or on a river. “The Mimika coast is among the areas most prone to maritime accidents and as such residents must remain attentive to their personal safety when traveling by water,” Arnold Kayame said to Tribun-Papua.com in Timika.

Arnold Kayame said PTFI is committed to supporting Basarnas (national search and rescue agency), in this case SAR Timika, in addressing the safety of the population. The aim is to work together with SAR Timika and provide response assistance in the event of a maritime accident taking place and needing to be attended to. “Many people are unable to be saved during a maritime accident for lack of proper safety gear while on the water. It is our hope that the life jackets will prove to be beneficial for residents of coastal Timika,” he said.

Meanwhile Head of the SAR Timika office, George Leo Merchy Randang disclosed the collaboration serves to impart appropriate information to residents towards cutting down the number of maritime accident casualties. “We expect feedback and further activity ensuing from today’s event, as there have been several incidents on Timika waters resulting from lack of safety measures. Residents are expected as well to assist the government in responding to maritime incidents,” he said.

George said collaboration between PTFI and SAR Timika is well established, specifically as demonstrated on this occasion of PTFI once again providing support in the form of life jackets for coastal residents. "Today we at SAR Timika are providing necessary counseling and information. It is our hope that residents will heed this counseling and information well and when they return to their village they should transmit it to the village community,” he said.

First Assistant to the Mimika Regency Secretary, Paulus Dumais expressed appreciation and support for the excellent collaboration between PTFI and SAR Timika in support of coastal communities. Ahead, the government will provide full support for similar activities that have a positive impact on the safety of residents who are on the water. “The government is not alone, and we will certainly engage in collaboration to cut down the number of casualties from maritime accidents in Timika,” Paulus said.  (*)
