PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) continues to commit to supporting cultural preservation in Mimika Regency. This time, PTFI supports Arapao traditional festival in Nayaro Village, Mimika Baru District, Mimika Regency, Papua.

Arapao is an event where children and youths from Kamoro Tribe grow up to live independently. “We, PTFI, have a principle that if the company is successful, then the community also must be successful. One of them is by supporting Kamoro Tribe’s traditional festival, Arapao,” said Vice President for Community Relations, Engel Enoch to Tribun-Papua.com, Friday (10/9/2022).

He said, since the beginning of Arapao event in Nayaro Village, Freeport had always coordinated with Kamoro Tribe Customary Council (Lemasko). “Therefore, apart from our cooperation with Lemasko, we also give a lot of support so that this festival can run smoothly,” he said.

Furthermore, he said beside arranging traditional houses of Nayaro Village’s residents, PTFI also provides other assistance such as transportation and food necessities. “Freeport supports the preparation since two years ago starting from building traditional houses until today’s implementation,” he said.

Nayaro Village is one of a village under PT Freeport Indonesia’s assistance due to the mining operations activity. PTFI has some work programs in Nayaro Village such as in the health, education, economy, and transportation sectors. “This support will continue as long as PT Freeport is still operating,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Kamoro Tribe Customary Council (Lemasko), Gery Okoare said in this Arapao festival, 76 children are released to live independently. “They undergo a tradition of release from 10 to 15 years to mature themselves, mature physically and mentally," he said.

Gery also did not forget to thank PT Freeport Indonesia for the support that has been given. "Thank you PTFI for the support during the Arapao festival," he said. (*)
