Labuan Bajo, 9 September 2024 - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and the environmental conservation foundation Yayasan Bambu Lingkungan Lestari (YBLL) have signed a collaboration agreement for the development of an innovative and sustainable community economy based on bamboo, for the population in Coastal Timika, Central Papua.
The signing of the collaboration agreement was conducted by PTFI Deputy President Director Jenpino Ngabdi and YBLL Chairperson Monica Tanuhandaru in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, on Sunday (8/9).
Jenpino said the collaboration embodies PTFI support and endorsement for increasing and building community capacity and sustainable development. "This collaboration affirms PTFI's commitment to conducting a responsible mining operation and consistently providing sustainable value addition for the environment and communities,” he stated.
In the implementation, Maria Bintang Laut Cooperative (KMBL) from Timika Diocese, which is a partner to PTFI will be working together with YBLL to provide communities with intensive training on matters relating to the sowing of seeds, planting, and maintenance of bamboo. Demonstration plots will then be established, accompanied by mentoring and assistance, in three proposed locations in Timika namely the villages of Nayaro, Tipuka, and Ayuka in Mimika, Central Papua, along with other areas in several regions across Indonesia. In 2006, KMBL began partnering with PTFI to empower communities in the lowland and coastal areas of Mimika Regency.
The goal of this collaboration was to create a model for the development of an economy based on bamboo that is innovative and sustainable, in support of achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) locally and setting a paradigm for establishing harmony and compatibility between industry and environmental conservation.
It is known that bamboo has unique characteristics, among others a healthy and robust cluster has the ability to store 3,600 liters of water and absorb 3.33 tons of CO2 equivalent. With 1,500 types of utilization offered, bamboo holds massive economic potential.
YBLL Chairperson Monica Tanuhandaru elucidated, the program was designed to provide communities with practical skills. "The program will be run using a development model for bamboo cultivation pilot projects, with application of the Lestari bamboo forest method developed by YBLL in Timika and ensuring long-term sustainability through follow-up training on utilization and maintenance, and provision of continuing counseling and guidance,” Monica said.
In addition to intensive training and planting of bamboo, the collaboration will encompass an empowerment and gender equality program with a focus on participation by women in the training program and implementation.
PTFI together with the Mimika Regency government and local residents is endeavoring to accelerate mangrove ecosystem restoration in the Ajkwa River estuary area in Mimika by means of an estuary structure program. Among others, the bamboo structure method serves to trap tailings sediment and form it into new land, which will be planted with mangroves.
The bamboo structure method captures and retains sediment using bamboo arranged into "E" or "T" forms, thus their E-Groin or T-Groin description. The estuary structure program engages 18 community groups consisting of members of the Kamoro Tribe who inhabit the lowland areas of Mimika Regency. From late 2022 through 2024, PTFI employed 200 native Kamoro Tribe members for this endeavor.
This program is expected to contribute to local economic growth, environmental conservation, carbon absorption, and developing and building community capacity to manage natural resources in a sustainable manner.
