PTFI, IBCSD & Bappenas Hold Dialog on Achieving SDGs in Eastern Indonesia

07 June 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), together with Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD) and Ministry of National Development Planning Kementerian (Bappenas) discussed the vital role played by the business sector, specifically the mining and extractive industry, in pushing for achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in eastern Indonesia. The business sector is deemed to have the capacity to implement SDGs in their operating areas. This discussion was conducted during a National Dialog titled “Strengthening Regional Development Through Engaging Business Sectors in Implementation of SDGs”, on Monday (30/5) in Jakarta.

During the dialog, speakers consisting of representatives from the Mimika Regency government, UNDP Indonesia, the local caucus for sustainable development Lingkar Temu Kabupaten Daerah, Padjadjaran University SDGs Center, and PT Vale Indonesia concurred multisectoral synergy is essential towards achieving SDGs. To this end, businesses need to increase initiatives to accelerate regional development in an equitable manner.

"The power of multisectoral partnerships to implement SDG programs will bring about real impacts for the population, in particular towards meeting various development challenges. Moreover, the business sector enables relevant implementation of SDGs for the specific needs and characteristics of a region in its development agenda, such as through action plans, funding assistance, and others forms of participation,” the Head of National Secretariat for SDGs Vivi Yulaswati stated, as cited from a written statement on Tuesday (7/6/2022).

Meanwhile PTFI Director-EVP of Sustainable Development Claus Wamafma stated PTFI is aware of the importance of engaging the business sector in achieving SDGs. As such, Claus said, the company is joining fellow businesses to actively push for acceleration of sustainable development. Among others, through conducting dialogs on a national scale with relevant stakeholders.

"Events such as this one provides a forum for stakeholders, specifically from the business sector and the government, to share their best practices and seek common and mutual solutions for regional development and achieving SDGs. In Papua in particular, in implementing achievement of SDGs we have met with significant success to overcome common challenges, and to afford opportunities for Papua to become a region that develops sustainably,” Claus said.

He added, regional development planning requires adapting to the characteristics of each region. As such, involving stakeholders, including representatives from the people is necessary so that regional development planning remains consistent with the needs of the people in each area, and implements local wisdom while still maintaining orientation toward the future.

"PTFI’s partnership with the Mimika Regency government and the Amungme and Kamoro Empowerment Foundation YPMAK in various community development efforts is part of our commitment to bring about achievement of SDGs in Papua, specifically in Mimika. This multi-stakeholder strategic partnership is similarly implemented in drawing up the SDGs Regional Action Plan RAD, which encompasses a road map for accelerated achievement of SDGs over the 2020-2024 period,” Claus divulged.

PTFI’s track record in engaging in achievement of SDGs in Mimika, Claus recounted, is reflected in the community development programs that PTFI has initiated in conjunction with other entities in the economic, education, and health sectors. "All of these programs are part of our commitment to support regional development programs, in alignment with regulation and established international guidelines. We are confident the enduring contributions we have made over the 55 years of our presence will continue to positively impact Papua to become more self-reliant in the future, in accordance with development goals under the SDGs,” Claus said.

Mimika Regency Secretariat Second Assistant for Economy and Development, Syahrial said the Mimika Regency government deems non-government, including private sector, engagement in drafting regional development plans is highly helpful towards formulating better strategic action plans. "We appreciate the involvement of PTFI and YPMAK in drafting the Mimika Regency SDGs Regional Action Plan 2020-2024 and providing strategic inputs. Such inputs have assisted us in drawing up action plans that are more focused on regional development through better attention to more directed success indicators,” Syahrial said.
