The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) has not yet handed the management of Wabu Block over to the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Mining Industry Holding, MIND ID. Even though the plan is to have the gold mine block be managed by PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTM). Wabu Block is a gold mine block or area once used by Freeport when mining gold rocks in Papua.
MIND ID President Director, Orias Petrus Moedak, said that the Wabu Block was still under control of the EMR Ministry after Freeport released/relinquished it to the state. “With regards to Wabu many are asking me about Wabu, well the position of Wabu is still with the EMR Ministry. We haven’t decided anything yet,” stated Orias during a press conference, as quoted on Wednesday (9/1).
He explained the bid for Wabu Block, or any mining area is a long process. The procedure/sequence is an investor will bid to the central government, the regional administration, thereafter to SOE, ROE and lastly to the private sector.
In the case of the Wabu Block, the central government has already made an acquisition move. However, no decision has been made in terms of the area, which is considered to contain an abundance of gold, will be managed by a member of the SOE Mining Holding. “Because it hasn’t been given to us yet, we are in no position to comment much. But, the position of the block still remains there (EMR Ministry), it hasn’t moved yet. And, in terms of what the bids are, if any, all is still with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources,” he stated.
During a recent hearing with DPR RI (House of Representatives) Commission VI, Orias explained, the Governor of Papua had written to him. In said letter, the local regional administration handed the Wabu Block over to MIND ID. That is the reason the Holding Management plans to hand the Wabu Block over to ANTM. Said handover is in accordance with directives received from the SOE Minister, Erick Thohir.
Erick Thohir’s desire for ANTM to be permitted to process to the gold mine was welcomed by ANTM Management. “There is a letter from the Governor handing over the management to MIND ID, but the gold expert is Antam… will handover to Antam for follow up,” he explained.
