In the last few days, a video has been circulating on TikTok showing snowfall in Grasberg, Central Papua, Indonesia. This area is known for being the location of the gold mining operation of PT Freeport Indonesia. The viral video of snowfall in Papua was uploaded on the TikTok account @andreevav44 on Sunday (July 23).
The person who captured the snowfall on video is an employee at PT Freeport, and they shared it on their personal TikTok account. The video's caption read, "Snowfall at PT Freeport Indonesia," as Andre wrote.
Grasberg has long been a gold mining site in Mimika Regency, Central Papua. This mine is included in PT Freeport Indonesia's open pit mining area.
The mining operation involves extracting and processing ore to obtain fine sand containing copper, gold, and silver.
Located at an altitude of 4,800 meters, Grasberg experiences cold temperatures and occasional snowfall. From this high altitude, the eternal snow of Puncak Jaya can also be seen in the Grasberg area.
The phenomenon of snowfall in Grasberg, Central Papua, occurs nearly every year. To reach the mining area, PT Freeport Indonesia employees must use vehicles to traverse the steep, rocky mountain roads.
However, with the advancement of transportation and technology, Grasberg can now be accessed via an electric-powered cable car system suspended on a 1,660-meter-long steel cable.
