Sri Mulyani Visited Freeport Mine: Largest in Indonesia

05 December 2022

Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati shared the moment of visiting the Grasberg Mine in Mimika, Papua, which is managed by PT Freeport Indonesia. Sri Mulyani said this mine is the largest in Indonesia. "The Indonesian people certainly know about @freeportindonesia, one of Indonesia's largest mining companies at the moment," Sri Mulyani said via her official Instagram account on Monday, December 5, 2022.

Sri Mulyani visited the Grasberg Mine last weekend, Sunday, December 4, 2022. She said that she had seen firsthand one of the largest gold mines in the world. According to her, the Grasberg Mine is an important asset for Indonesia.

The Indonesian government took over 51.2 percent share ownership of the Grasberg mine in 2018. The mine, said Sri Mulyani, had made a very large contribution to exports and state revenues. "Since 2020, the mining has been 100 percent underground, which makes Freeport one of the largest underground mining operations in the world," she said.

She admitted that she was happy because after the divestment process, Freeport Indonesia had carried out various significant developments. Development is carried out both in terms of environmental management, human resource development, and social contributions. Sri Mulyani hopes that Freeport Indonesia can maintain this mandate with the principles of good governance. The aim is to maintain public trust and become the pride of Indonesia.

Freeport is Now Owned by Indonesia

Previously, Minister of Investment Bahlil Lahadalia emphasized that PT Freeport Indonesia was no longer owned by foreigners as before. This is because 51 percent of PT FI's shares now belong to Indonesia. "We can no longer think that Freeport belongs to other people. Freeport now belongs to the Indonesian government, with 51 percent of its shares owned by BUMN," he said.

He explained Freeport is one of the world's class companies. So, if Indonesia is able to manage it well, this mine is considered to provide a bargaining position for Indonesia in the eyes of the world. "We as the citizens of the country can manage domestic resources properly," he said.
