Strengthening MSMEs, PT Freeport Indonesia Provides Training for Sago Food Production to Housewives in Timika

01 August 2023

PT Freeport Indonesia provides training on sago-based food production for housewives in Karang Senang SP3 Urban Village, Timika, on Friday (28/7/2023) at Maranatha Church."This training is a continuation of the previous training, which focused on mental strengthening and entrepreneurship. Through this training, we also identify potential participants who can join our fostered MSMEs," as quoted from PT Freeport Indonesia's official account.

The Community Economic Development (CED) of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), through the Division of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise Development (PPUMKM), implements the fostered MSME program, where participants receive four coaching packages, including mentoring, training, research & development, and financial literacy.

This year, we have a total of 212 fostered MSMEs from local entrepreneurs. With this increase, we are committed to providing support through partnerships and collaborations to develop and advance MSMEs in Mimika. "Many thanks to the program mentors from Freeport. This training also aligns with the Church's program, which is family welfare, because these housewives will have the opportunity to generate their own income through the skills acquired in this training," they said.

The mentor from PPUMKM PTFI, Dina Waramoti, stated that this is a continuation of the previous training, which focused on mental strengthening and entrepreneurship. "So, they were first equipped with theoretical knowledge, then given entrepreneurship materials, and now practice for them to become stronger in running their MSMEs," she said.

According to her, this is the first time they have conducted training with practical elements, meaning they are implementing a new approach so that the mothers participating in this program can be selected as fostered MSMEs if they show good potential. "We are trying out this method; previously, we provided materials in the classroom only, and now we are trying a new approach where we practice directly after receiving materials in the classroom. So, this is the second stage, the first stage was done in the classroom," she explained.

In addition to providing skills in food management, PTFI through CED also offers coaching in financial knowledge, including how to obtain capital loans. CED follows two patterns for fostered partners, one through the Bina Utama Mandiri Foundation, and the other through a partnership with Bank BRI. "In the program we implement, there are four coaching packages, including mentoring, training, research and development, and financial literacy," she added.

Furthermore, the UMKM Group Leader of CED PTFI, Verdy Abdulah, mentioned that in the coaching program by CED, PTFI also involves other parties, including local government, state-owned enterprises (BUMN), and other private entities.

Furthermore, they are also open to collaborating with any party interested in the efforts to develop and advance MSMEs in Mimika Regency. "The number of fostered partners keeps increasing; this year alone, it has increased by 209. So, for this program, we need cooperation or collaboration. Whether it's from the Government through the Department for promotion or from banks for financing. We are also open to working with other parties like YPMAK and others, we would be very delighted," he said.

Verdy hopes that in the future, PPUMKM PTFI will not work alone but will be able to collaborate with other parties. He mentioned that PPUMKM empowers its fostered partners every year so that they can stand on their own and run their MSMEs. "For our fostered partners, the SOP is that one member, either the husband or wife, must be a native Papuan. The number of fostered partners may fluctuate due to participants being empowered or completing the coaching program," he added, as quoted from fajarpapua.com.

Representing the training participants, Paulina Selassa stated that this training was a new and unprecedented experience for them. She emphasized that the training has a significant impact on mothers who are willing to venture into entrepreneurship for the welfare of their families and the advancement of the region in the MSME sector. "We are highly motivated by Freeport's exceptional approach because of its immense and extraordinary benefits," expressed Paulina, who is also a Pastor from the GKI Maranatha SP3 Church in Timika.

Another participant, Serlina Faidiban, added that this is a very beneficial activity that brings advantages as the women can now start businesses and increase their family income.
