The Vice President Asks Freeport Indonesia to Continue to Empower the Papuan People

12 July 2023

PT Freeport Indonesia is asked to continue to actively contribute to the development of the Papuan people. Vice President Ma'ruf Amin said the government is encouraging Freeport to help the people of Papua increase competence and productivity through vocational training. "We must increase the competence and productivity of the productive age population to contribute to economic growth," said the Vice President during a visit to Freeport's Nemangkawi Mining Institute in Mimika Regency, Central Papua, Wednesday (12/7).

The Vice President believes the presence of the Nemangkawi Mining Institute is a form of partiality in investment to build a workforce, especially indigenous Papuans with capacities that match the qualifications for the job market. "Reviewing the various activities of the Nemangkawi Mining Institute, I am sure that the workforce, especially indigenous Papuans, have a variety of qualifications, skills, knowledge, and experience to support the company's performance," he said.

Ma'ruf hopes that PTFI, in addition to building school infrastructure, will also transform vocational education from upstream to downstream. He referred to developed countries having recognized the importance of vocational education in building quality human resources. "It is highly hoped that support from the industrial world, such as PT Freeport Indonesia, is not only limited to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs but also involves sustainable collaboration. Consequently, Indonesia must also participate in a similar process in order to improve the quality of its workforce." he explained.

PTFI President Director Tony Wenas explained that his party is committed to improving education in Papua. Tony explained since 1996, it has been carried out sustainably by PTFI and increasing the number of native Papuan workers at PTFI, which currently has reached more than 40%. "In the work area, PTFI has implemented various programs to improve the education of young Papuans, including at the Nemangkawi Mining Institute," he said on the same occasion.

Tony also said that the Nemangkawi Mining Institute is a Vocational Training center which aims to provide education to the young generation of Papua. In this institution, they can take part in job training, such as internship programs, other than training programs to become mining operators and develop other skills. The purpose is for them to become skilled workers who are ready to work either at PTFI or at other companies. "So, when they start working, either at PTFI or at other companies, they are ready to be responsible for their duties as skilled workers," he concluded.
