PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) President Director Tony Wenas, said that currently the number of workers at Freeport's copper and gold mine in Timika, Papua is around 27 thousand. According to him, the majority of workers are children of the nation from various tribes and regions. “So the total number of employees at PTFI and its contractors is around 27 thousand, consisting of various ethnic groups in Indonesia, of which more than 40% are indigenous Papuans,” said Tony to detikcom a few times ago, cited from https://ptfi.co.id/i, that posted on 30 August 2021.

Tony said PTFI itself ensures to continue to increase the number of employees from the indigenous Papuan community. Some of them have even occupied strategic positions in the company. “This is our commitment to continually increase the number of Papuan employees. We have a development and training program for employees, ensuring our employees have needed competency and skills as well as ensuring their development so they can go to the higher level because it has proven to be a lot of success," he said. "For example, one of the members of the board of directors is a Papuan and I also have 9 vice presidents who are native Papuans. There are also quite a lot of middle managers who are Papuans and we continue to improve this," he added.

Furthermore, Tony explained a lot of the millennial generation that fill Engineer positions in Freeport. “At the mining site, there is an Amungme indigenous people who have been working for more than 20 years in Grasberg and have now become manager,” he explained. He considered this as proof of company’s enthusiasm to invite indigenous Papuan people to move forward. This is also done when recruiting employees where the company prioritizes the indigenous Papuan. "Our recruitment process first prioritizes Papua, it starts from Mimika Regency, continues to the Papua Province level, if there is no one, we will look for outside Papua," he explained.
