A scientific speech was held at two universities there are Institute Technology of Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM), on Tuesday, October 4th 2022. Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BPKM) Bahlil Lahadalia and the Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Freeport-McMoRan Richard C. Adkerson presented the material as the speakers on that occasion.
In the lecturing session themed Economic Transformation Through Downstreaming with Local Wisdom, Bahlil Lahadalia emphasizes the importance of downstreaming as an instrument for developing countries to become developed countries.
Bahlil also stated that downstream is an effort to develop sustainable industries that have been proven to boost economic growth, create job vacancies, and increase state income.
Moreover, the government insists on encouraging the downstream to develop the added value of natural resources, for example, by constructing a copper smelter by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in Gresik, East Java, whose construction was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo in October 2021.
More than 1,500 students attended the scientific lecture that was held at UGM Yogyakarta. They were very enthusiastic about the presentation of the scientific lecture presented by Bahlil Lahadalia and Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Freeport-McMoRan, Richard C. Adkerson.
“Today is very extraordinary since we are doing a scientific lecture in UGM and being assisted by the Rector. Earlier, we discussed about the importance of downstreaming in providing added value and creating job vacancies,” said Bahlil. “On the other hand, we also talk about the current global economy and in the future. And thank God, I am very happy to be able to share with my fellow students, which was quite a lot for about 1,500 people,” he added.
Furthermore, the background for the scientific lecture in several universities in Indonesia was because the Minister of Investment wanted to explain to students the current economic conditions in Indonesia, especially downstream. “We want to explain to our younger students what is really happening in our economy now and especially regarding downstreaming,” said Bahlil.
Thus, The Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BPKM) invited the Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Freeport-McMoRan Richard C. Adkerson, to the scientific lecture so that his presentation could be more precise and easier to understand.
“The government is currently encouraging the downstreaming and Freeport is one of the leading companies for its FPI. Freeport also have experienced downstreaming in mining, hence, we also ask them to explain. Freeport explains everything clearly, so that, most of the audience are satisfied. If the government was the one who explains, maybe they are not satisfied,” said Bahlil.
