Wet Material Flow Incident at the GBC Underground Mine

12 September 2025

On Monday, September 8, at 10:00 p.m. WIT, a flow of wet material occurred in the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) underground mine, blocking access routes and trapping seven workers. The emergency response team, together with the authorities, has been working tirelessly to open access and drill toward the workers’ suspected location. Removing the large volumes of material required to reach the area will take additional time. PTFI has successfully drilled into several points in the area; however, the workers have not yet been located.

For safety and security reasons, all mining operations have been temporarily suspended to prioritize the rescue efforts. We express our deepest sympathy and remain fully committed to doing everything possible to bring our colleagues back safely.
