Supporting the National Sports Week or PON XX in Papua, the central and regional administrations have prepared venues for a number of sports that are spread throughout Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Merauke City and the Mimika Regency.
Of the various sports to be contested, in athletics, marathon and speed-walking will be taking place in the Kuala Kencana area, Mimika Regency. This district situated in the southern part of the Papua Province, which is managed by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), is a functional city in the Mimika Regency, Papua and which was officiated by the second President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto, on December 5, 1995.
Located some 20 kilometres to the north of Timika, and 45 kilometres to the southwest of Tembagapura City, Kuala Kencana is situated in the southern part of the Papuan Lowland covering an area the size of 17.425 hectares. PT Freeport Indonesia Manager of External Corporate Communication, Kerry Yarangga, disclosed that competing athletes in the marathon and speed-walking numbers in the Kuala Kencana area will be treated to an atmosphere that is both fresh and cool.
This is because the city that was finished in 1996 is located in the midst of a tropical forest and designed to be environmental and ecosystem sensitive. “Kuala Kencana will be noted as being the freshest and coolest competition arena because it is surrounded by towering trees,” thus stated Kerry.
In addition, the city’s layout design is also modern and the city square an enchanting icon. Moreover, this city was also designed by PT Freeport Indonesia complemented by such complete facilities. Here, one can find a shopping and entertainment centre, recreation center, schools, as well as a clinic that was built to support the welfare of its residents. And that is not all; Kuala Kencana City is also the first city in Indonesia to have a waste water channel system which is directed to a sewage treatment center, and is developed to be one of the supporting elements of the mining activities in the Mimika Regency, you know!
Kerry disclosed that the Kuala Kencana area which is ready to hold the marathon and speed-walking arenas are a part of PT Freeport Indonesia’s support to PON XX Papua. “We very much support the Games and for the preparations we are absolutely ready.
We are prepared and ready to support whatever is decided to be the PON XX Papua Committee’s agenda,” committed Kerry.
