Already Spent US$700 Million, Freeport Targets Smelter to Reach 50%

23 February 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) targets the construction of the copper concentrate processing and refining facility, or smelter, in Gresik is able to reach 50% this year. Currently, the smelter development has reached 14%. As is known, Freeport is building a new copper smelter in the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate, or JIIPE, in the Special Economy Zone. “This smelter project has already reached 14% and is anticipated to reach 50%, the end of this year We have already spent US$700 million to date,” Freeport Indonesia President Director, Tony Wenas, informed CNBC INDONESIA, Tuesday (2/22).

At the moment, stated Tony Wenas, the company is building and completing a new copper smelter project, and is also starting to develop a precious metal refinery, both gold and silver. “Eventually, we will process all our concentrate, totalling approximately 3 million tons per year, in-country. Both copper and gold will be purified in-country,” explained Tony. Thereby, eventually the final products of this smelter copper cathodes, gold bullion and silver bullion will form the end products,” Tony continued to say.

In contrast, Freeport Indonesia this year targets its gold production to rise over last year’s 1.3 million ounces/oz gold to 1.6 million ton oz in 2022. The increase in the gold production target for this year is in line with the underground mining capacity, which has already reached 100%. The capital expenditure provided is US$2,5 billion in order to enable pursuing the gold production target this year. “That constitutes the planning and it is very fortunate that the price of gold is on the up, thus we will be able to catch the wind fall,” he said.

Tony also explained, based on the Izin Usaha Pertambangan Khusus (IUPK) or Special Mining Business License for exploration activities will only be valid till 2041. Thereby, all exploration details carried out by Freeport Indonesia this year until 2041 are only for detailed exploration to increase the total of reserves in hand to date. With the amount of the existing reserves alone, Tony claimed, Freeport Indonesia is able to mine until 2050. “So, because our license/permit is only until 2041, currently we are not carrying out any further exploration for new reserves, because the current existing reserves we have mined are sufficient until 2041, in fact, even beyond.
