Bahlil Affirms Downstreaming of Natural Resources Conducted in Sustainable Way

11 October 2022

Indonesia’s wealth of natural resources is acknowledged the world over, especially where it concerns the variety of mineral contents. As is mandated by law all-natural wealth is destined to be people’s property in the interest of their prosperity.

Therefore, downstreaming is the ambition of the government to raise value on mineral products and to gradually strengthen the domestic industry with the intention to turn Indonesia into a developed nation. A strong supporter of downstreaming is PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) which is in the process of building its second smelter in the Special Economic Zone in Gresik, Regency of Gresik, in East Java.

The Minister of Investment/Head of the Coordinating Board of Capital Investment (BKPM) revealed that in the processing of natural wealth in Indonesia the Government will always taks consideration with the factor of sustainability.

“Concerning Freeport, the time to think about it as another party’s property is past tense now as Freeport now belongs to Indonesia with 51% of its shares owned by BUMN, the Body of State-owned Enterprises. There is no need any more to perceive PTFI as a “cheater” because 98% of its labor force now consists of Indonesian nationals,” said Bahlil to CNBC Indonesia some time ago.

As everyone knows, downstreaming has become a policy of developed nations to transform into nations of progress. In this case downstreaming has become a strategy to raise added value,

In downstreaming, the commodities to be exported are no longer in the form of raw materials but in the form of semi-finished goods or finished goods. Here the aim of downstreaming is to increase the sale’s value of the commodities, to strengthen the industrial structure, provide job opportunities and increase business opportunities inside the country.

Based on data of the Ministry of Investment/BKPM, industrial downstreaming has proven to be an immense contributor to raising product value. And this incudes nickel ore which was banned for export since January 1, 2020.

On the same occasion, PTFI President Director, Tony Wenas, explained that today PTFI is able to process copper ore into copper concentrate with an additional value of 95%. And with downstreaming the additional value of copper cathodes can even become 100%.

“Later on, when PTFI’s second smelter is completed everything can be 100% processed in the country and that includes gold and silver refinement,” Tony explains.

For information PTFI as a mining company operating in Papua always involves the Papua community when it comes to carrying out mining activities. This can be seen from the composition of ethnic Papuan employees which has reached 41%.

Ethnic Papuans are also given various strategic positions. Specifically, 57 native Papuans are managers in a senior position, 9 occupy positions such as Senior VP and VP, while one occupies the position of Director.
