End of 2022, Freeport Smelter Reaches 50%

20 December 2022

JAKARTA. PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is targeting the Manyar Smelter Project in Gresik to reach 50% by the end of 2022. Freeport Indonesia Vice President Government Relations, Harry Pancasakti, disclosed that the downstream program is ongoing.

“The Gresik smelter is on target and God Willing, by the end of December 2022 its construction will reach 50%,” he stated at the ‘Indonesia Energy and Mining Conference 2022’, yesterday. According to Harry the entire construction process of the Manyar smelter is targeted to be completed by December 2023. Subsequently, the commissioning and operation process can commence in 2024.

With the completion of said smelter, all copper concentrate production can be refined in-country. Currently, Freeport’s production reaches 200.000 tons of copper ore per day. Freeport purifies 40% of its production at the smelter facility it already owns, while another 60% is still being exported. Freeport targets its production capacity to increase next year. “For the year 2023, there’s an increase of 10%. Thus, growing to the level of 220.000 tons of ore per day that has been mined and processed,” Harry explained.

The Manyar smelter is designed for a copper concentrate processing capacity/volume of 2 million tons per year. Having this capacity, the Manyar smelter is alleged to become the largest copper processing site in the world. Eventually, the outcome of the Manyar smelter will be supplemented with the processed volume of the already operational smelter, namely PT Smelting, having a processing capacity of 1 million tons of copper concentrate per year. Thus, once the Manyar smelter is operational, Freeport will be able to process 3 million tons of copper concentrate per year.

Having said that, Freeport Indonesia Management hopes for the government’s concern/attention towards the copper industry in anticipation of the mineral export ban policy in June of 2023.

Harry iterated, downstream actions by Freeport Indonesia are presently running accordingly. Considering this fine investment situation, Freeport is hoping the government will participate in supporting this condition. “Freeport is quite optimistic in terms of implementing (its) investment for the coming year 2023,” he concluded.
