Giant Copper Factory in East Java Established, Requires 13,000 Workers

22 June 2023

Indonesia will undoubtedly have the world's most significant copper processing and refining facility (smelter) or factory. The factory in the JIIPE Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Gresik, East Java, belongs to PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI).

Through this project, at least PTFI will absorb 13,000 workers, of which 98% are native Indonesian workers and 50% are local workers from East Java.

President Joko Widodo said that the derivatives from the smelter will be integrated into finished goods with large ecosystems, one of which is the electric vehicle ecosystem. This can encourage Indonesia to become a developed country.

"This smelter is the foundation for us to become a developed country because from now on, it is based on consumption and production," he said while reviewing the smelter development project owned by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE) Special Economic Zone, Gresik, East Java on Tuesday, June 20.

In addition to building a smelter that will process 1.7 million tons of copper concentrate to produce 600 thousand tons of copper cathodes per year, PTFI is also constructing a Precious Metal Refinery (PMR). Later PMR will process anode mud into gold and silver bars of 6,000 tons annually.

Based on PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) presentation material, this copper smelter project continues to experience significant progress. Until the end of May 2023, the construction progress had reached 70.6%.

With the implementation of the project, which has reached 70.6%, the company has spent US$ 2.2 billion or around Rp 33 trillion in costs. These costs start from the soil compaction to the piles' installation.

Meanwhile, the progress underway in the construction of the copper smelter includes the construction of piles completed at 100%, concrete work at 67%, steel installation at 36%, steel installation in the tank area at 32%, and port construction at 98.6%.

Then for the progress of the PMR development itself, including the construction of piles that have been completed 100%, concrete work at 24%, and steel installation at 1.6%.
