Minister of Investment Releases Freeport Copper Concentrate Delivery

16 August 2022

Investment Minister/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BPKM), Bahlil Lahadalia, on Monday 15th August put to sea the ship Ajkwa with PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) copper concentrate on board setting sail from Amampare Port, Mimika,Central Papua on Monday.

The departure of the Ajkwa ship was part of a delivery of copper concentrate to the copper concentrate facility (smelter) the first of its kind built by PTFI and a Japanese Consortium in Gresik, East Java in 1996 and which is now being managed by PT Smelting.

The Ajkwa is a feeder vessel that was carrying 8,600 tons of copper concentrate to the Naziha, a ship docked in deep sea waters approximately 19 km from a port. The Naziha can contain 26,500 tons of concentrate which it will bring to PT Smelting. This is the 32nd delivery of concentrate to PT Smelting since January 22nd.

PTFI President Director, Tony Wenas, explained that the facility around the Amamapare Port which include a concentrate drying and storage plant, concentrate loading dock, power plant and a cargo dock play an important role in PTFI’s copper concentrate supply chain management.

“As a world class mining company, PTFI has always been committed to not only carry out safe and sustainable production, but also to implement good governance to realize sustainable supply chain management,” said Tony who was accompanied by Ministaer Bahlil at the Amamampere Port, Monday 8/15.

The Amamapura Port itself lies at the end of a 110 kilometer long pipe which drains cooper concentrate sludge from PT Freeport’s ore processing installations.

Arriving at the port, the concentrated slurry will then go through a drying process and then be stored in a warehouse to be subsequently sent to the smelter.

To date, 40 percent of copper comcentrate produced by PTFI will be on its way to the smelter plant of PT Smelting in Gresik. As a form of the company’s commitment to comply with government regulations, PTFI is currently completing the construction of the second smelter in the Gresik Economic Zone (SEZ) of the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE)

Tony said PTFI is targeting the completion of the smelter by end of July 22 at which time its progress percentage will have reached 38.2 percent and to further finish it by the end of 2023.

Tony said PTFI has targeted the end of the smelter construction with a progress achievement of 36.2% by the end of 2023 at which time it will be continued with pre-commissioning and commissioning for subsequent operation in May 2024.

“Once our new smelter will be in operation, PTFI will be enabled to purify all of its own copper concentrate production inside the country. We are fully aware that this achievement will make every line of operations capable of providing multiplier effects that are increasingly significant for the people and the state,” Tony said.

Minister BahlilLahdalla also expressed his appreciation for PTFI’s commitments to continue to provide added value through various operational activities, including the departure of the Ajkwa ship. Bahlil hopes that the multiplier effects provided by PTFI will accelerate the homogeneity of Indonesia’s development including people’s prosperity entry of foreign investment in various regions in Indonesia especially Papua.

“The Ajkwa ship that I just put to sea is not only carrying on board copper concentrate, but also the hope that the multiplier effects created by the copper smelter will continue to benefit the community.

On the other hand, the Government believes that the involvement of kocal workers at the Amamapare Port and the smooth running of PT Freeport Indonesia’s production and supply chain will continue to benefit the communities around PT Freeport Indonesia/s operations in Papua,” Bahlil said.
