Papua's Export Hikes 42,60%, BPS: Almost 100% Comes from Freeport!

18 October 2022

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Papua Province stated that the most significant export came from Amamapare Port, in Mimika Regency, that worth USD 779.77 million or 98.66 percent of Papua's total exports. It is indicated that PT Freeport's exports still influence it.

The Coordinator of the Distribution Statistics Function of BPS, Akhmad Fauzi, mentioned that the export growth in September 2022 increased by 42.60 percent to USD783.27 million compared to USD549.26 million in the previous month. "Indeed, for Papuan exports, it can be said that PT Freeport contributes almost 100 percent of it," quoted Antara on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

Thus, he continued, PT Freeport's export automatically determine the fluctuation of Papua's exports. "If we look at the type of commodity, the metal ore, fiber and ash, are the result of PT Freeport productions," he said.

Moreover, He explained that alongside metal fiber and ash, Papua also exports wood, fish, and other commodities. He stated that good cooperation between agencies is needed, hence the products could have a good value. "Wood has a good potential, but the development of wood is rather difficult. Not to mention that some countries have also been rather strict regarding wood exports," he said.

Lastly, for the fishery sector, he continued that Biak Numfor Regency also exports one ton of fish per month. He hopes that number can be increased again. "Papua is rich in marine resources, not only in Biak Regency, but several other regencies on the coast," he concluded.
