PTFI’s Mining Brings Highest Economic Growth Rate for Papua in 3rd Quarter 2021

15 December 2021

Papua Province’s economic growth reached 14.54% in 3rd Quarter 2021 making Papua the province with the highest economic growth rate on a national scale. PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) exploitation activities in the Regency of Mimika are one of the main contributions to the high rate of economic growth in Papua during that period. Data from the National Board of Statistics (BPS) refers to the mining and extraction sector as the largest contributor to Papua’s high rate of economic growth during 2021’s third quarter at 37.56% YoY.

“The high rate of Papua’s economic growth in 2021’s third quarter cannot be separated from the contribution of the mining and extraction sector – including PT Freeport Indonesia’s - one of the most vital sectors driving the Papua economy in the midst of a challenging pandemic,” said chief of Papua’s BPS, Adriana Helena Robana in a written statement quoted on Wednesday (12/15/2021).”Without the support of the mining and extraction sector, the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) based on Papua’s constant price index has actually only grown 2.42% in 2021’s third quarter,” she said.

As a member of Mind ID, PTFI’s contribution towards Papua’s economic growth rate is directly proportional with PTFI’s production increase throughout 2021’s third quarter. From July tol September 2021 PTFI’s production output of copper ore reached 956 million tons, or an increase of 76.05% compared to same period previous year (YoY). Meanwhile, PTFI’s gold production output reached 968 thousand ounces, an increase of 67.76% YoY. “PT Freeport Indonesia is grateful that the increase in our production boosted Papua’s economic growth significantly in 2021’s third quarter. We are aware that this positive achievement for Papua could not be made without the role of all stakeholders, including PTFI employees and the community who continue to support the sustainability of our operations in Mimika,” says PTFI President Director, Tony Wenas.

Tony added that in line with the production increase, PTFI’s efforts to improve the welfare of the community living in the surroundings of its operations have also expanded. And this, Tony said, has indirectly become the contributing factor to the high rate of Papua’s economic growth.

Tony further explained in the midst of the multitude of impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic that PTFI in association with the Mimika Regional Administration, the Timika Dioceses, the Foundation for the Empowerment of the Amungme and Kamoro Communities (YPMAK) and various other partners, has been consistently pursuing to directly support the durability of the people’s economy through various direct assistance programs and by empowering the community to take on entrepreneurship.

PTFI, Tony continues, will continuously pursue to develop Papua by prioritizing collaboration and synergy with the Government and various other stakeholders in order to support the Government to accelerate its achievement of its Sustainable Development Goals/SDGS.  “PTFI will consistently strive to become a true partner of the Indonesian Government in its efforts to accelerate the achievement of its Sustainable Development Goals from Papua to Indonesia. We will at all times keep the door to collaboration open to implement Papua’s vision of Growth, Self-sufficiency and Prosperity,” Tony said.

Meanwhile Head of the Regional Planning and Development Agency (Bappeda) for Mimika, Yohana Paliling expressed full appreciation of PTFI’s pursuits to develop Papua. “The Mimika Regional Administration is very appreciative of PTFI’s initiatives to develop Papua, particularly Mimika. The development of Papua by PTFI has not only been realized though Papua’s high economic growth rate, but is also reflected in improving the welfare of its citizens living in the surrounding areas of PTFI’s operational area consistent with the development goals of Mimika.,” Yohana said.
