The Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati mentioned that PT Freeport Indonesia’s mining tailing is beneficial for the construction of the Trans Nabire Road up to the Mimika Regency Administration Office’s infrastructure. For information, tailing is the leftover material/waste after the process of separating gold and silver minerals from the ore in the mine.
She stated the said remaining material of the mine is subsequently recycled into concrete mixture, and has been implemented by Freeport since 2007. The result of the recycling has been successfully used as the principal material for the construction of a number of infra structures, among which is the Trans-Nabire Road, Mimika Regency Administration Offices, and many others.
“These various infra structure projects have already utilized as many as 1.1 million tons of tailing material amounting to US$3 million,” explained Sri Mulyani, as quoted from her Instagram account, Monday (12/5).
Not just infra structure, Sri Mulyani said that tailings can also be used for revegetation of various types of plants, such as kasuarina, matoa, ironwood, to plantation plants such as coffee and cocoa. In addition, the land used for tailing deposition can also be used for food crop farming, fishery, and animal husbandry. “Deposition of said tailing has also manifested into new mangrove land, which is the habitat for crabs, shrimps, fish and so on,” she stated.
During her visit to Freeport, Sri Mulyani took time to plant tree seedlings, in order to become witnesses that plants are able to thrive on former tailing deposition plots. “With any luck, I will have the opportunity to see the result of the tree I am planting, once,” she concluded.
