President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said he was pleased with PT Freeport Indonesia's contribution to state revenue, reaching US$ 7.5 billion in 2021. In addition to that, PT Freeport Indonesia also plays a role as a trigger for the growth of the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) for Mimika Regency, Papua Province.
I'm happy because last year's revenue from PT Freeport Indonesia was around, I don't know, I hope it's not wrong, at US$ 7.5 billion. This is also a very big number, said President Jokowi during a meeting with the ranks of employees and leaders of PT Freeport Indonesia in Mimika Regency, Papua Province, on Wednesday (31/8).
The gathering was also attended by the President Commissioner of PT Freeport Indonesia Richard Adkerson with Mrs. Kathleen, President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia Tony Wenas, and all directors and commissioners. Also accompanying the President in this event were First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir, and Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia.
President Jokowi stated that apart from contributing to state revenue, PT Freeport Indonesia also played a role as a trigger for the growth of GRDP for Mimika Regency, Papua Province.
It is stated that 68% of Mimika Regency's revenue comes from Freeport. Hence, ladies and gentlemen, Freeport has a large contribution to Mimika Regency 68% and Papua is 34%, which are also very large, explained President Jokowi.
On that occasion, President Jokowi specifically advised the President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia Tony Wenas to be careful in managing PT Freeport because the income is not only felt by Freeport employees but the people in Mimika Regency and Papua Province.
Be careful about this. If it goes down, Papua and Mimika will go down too. "Be careful, because after I checked the numbers, the contribution is very big," said President Jokowi.
On that occasion, he also explained PT Freeport Indonesia's support for the establishment of the Papua Football Academy in Papua.
This morning I just inaugurated the Papua Football Academy, which is 100 percent supported by PT Freeport Indonesia. I ordered it to be built after the implementation of the National Games last November. That night I invited Mr. President Director Tony Wenas, he added.
To Tony Wenas, President Jokowi asked for help to produce talents in the field of sports, especially football in Papua so that the big stadiums in Jayapura and Mimika are productive.
Please, I ask that the coach must be taken from the best foreign coach, so that later football talents from Papua who are 12 or 13 years old from now can enter the National Football Team, for the U-14, the U-16, U -19, then entered the national and international elite in football, he hopes.
